PJ Whelihan's Pub Performs with Community

Sports bars have come a long way and these days the most successful ventures are big, bright and highly family oriented with casual but generally upscale decor. They include great food with full lunch and dinner menus, scores of imported beers on tap, and multi-room, high-end audio/video systems. P.J. Whelihan's is a prime example of today's sports bar done right. First opened in 1983, the chain now covers 16 locations in the Philadelphia and southern New Jersey region including the most recent addition in suburban Downingtown, PA. It is a multi-use venue that can handle not just day-to-day sporting broadcasts but parties and live events as well.

The new location features a distributed system of 24 VERIS28 dual 8-inch, two-way loudspeakers. Low frequency reinforcement is handled by eight VLF212 subwoofers. The room was a bit of an acoustical challenge with the main bar located in the center of the room and the ceiling having complex facets. The VERIS loudspeakers offer a focused pattern, allowing even coverage and high intelligibility throughout.

New Product Update: VLF208LV

The new VLF208LV, a dual 8-inch in a larger volume enclosure than the original VLF208, is designed for applications that require the lowest frequencies from a slim-profile design. With a birch-ply enclosure measuring just 10 x 21.75 x 21.75 inches, a frequency response down to 40 Hz (-3dB) and an operating range to 30 Hz (-10dB), the 1000W program VLF208LV delivers great low end power. Its low velocity port design extends the response while eliminating air noise through the heavy duty 16-gauge steel perforated grille. The VLF208LV is available in a portable version with built-in handles and a pole mount socket as well as an installation version in black or white with multiple M10 hang points.

Community Sound Quality for Korundi House of Culture

Korundi House of Culture is a new cultural nexus in the Lapland capital of Rovaniemi, Finland. Formed from the old 1930s red brick building of the Rovaniemi mail-van depot, the building has been expanded with a box extension designed in weathered, painted steel, which houses a multipurpose 340-seat concert auditorium featuring Community iBOX loudspeakers.

The left and right clusters each consist of two iBOX iHP1566, two-way systems while the central cluster utilizes two iHP1266 two-way systems. Two 18-inch i118S subwoofers extend the low frequency of the system, while four iHP1266 loudspeakers provide movable fills and point effects. The auditorium's acoustic materials, geometric shapes, dimensions and reflecting surfaces were all carefully chosen, resulting in a naturally warm and translucently clear acoustic design. The system designers noted that with the acoustics so carefully designed into the auditorium, it was important to have a sound system that was extremely natural and well balanced. Accurate dispersion and coverage of the iBOX system was also critical so the amplified sound didn't alter the direct and reflected balance of the acoustic space.

Modern Audio for Historic Cracow University

A new audio system was recently designed and installed for the Kotlownia, the conference and exhibition hall of the Tadeusz Kosciuszko Cracow University of Technology in Krakow, Poland. High intelligibility and precise pattern control were the essential parameters. Meeting these requirements was a left and right pair of ENTASYS™ three-way, full-range, column line-array loudspeaker systems. A low-profile VLF208 subwoofer was wall mounted to further extend the low frequency performance of the system.
